Right of Appeal

Candidates have a right of appeal against academic decisions taken by Boards of Examiners and or Faculty Boards (or Academic unit concerned) that affect their academic progress. We strongly recommend that candidates should consult with Module/Subject leader before lodging an appeal so that they can help candidate to decide if appealing is the most appropriate action to take.

Appeals may be made in respect of the following areas relating to the process of assessment

a decision consequential to an academic failure (e.g. termination of registration)

a formal assessment result

a formal examination result

a degree classification

Grounds of Appeal

Grounds of appeal in the context of the areas listed above are allowed as follows:

  • Material circumstances affecting the student's performance of which a Board of Examiners or the Board of the Faculty (or Module/Subject leader) had not been aware before reaching its decision, only if reasonable grounds can be presented by the student why such circumstances had not been presented to the Board in advance of its meeting.

  • Procedural irregularities in the formal conduct of an assessment or in reaching another academic decision.

  • Evidence of prejudice or of bias on the part of one or more examiners and markers.

  • A student who wishes to question examination grade/marks.

  • Exclusions from Appeal

    The following grounds cannot be considered as the basis for an appeal:

    Dissatisfaction with the academic judgement of the internal and external examiners and/or markers including the Board of Examiners.

      Dissatisfaction with member of the academic staff.

      Matters of disputes that are dealt with following student complaints:

  • that complaints relating to the quality of teaching or supervision, or other circumstances

  • that relate to the delivery of a programme of study before the point of assessment or

  • the submission of a assessments or dissertation, are not subject to these procedures. They should instead be raised under the Partner Institute’s student complaints procedure.

  • All appeals submitted outside of the time frame set out will normally be excluded from consideration.

    Notification of Appeal

    The candidates should prepare a dossier for this appeal, including a description of the grievance, the course syllabus, all graded assignments and examinations done for the course, other material

    used to determine the course grade, as well as any other information in support of the grievance.

  • Formal appeal(s) should be submitted to the Head of Partner Institute or Module/Subject Leader within 14 days of being notified of an academic and/or assessment decision.

  • A candidates who wishes to question an examination marking grade, a formal appeal(s) should be submitted to the BOE through Partner Institute within 14 days from the date of result released.

  • All appeals require a processing fee (subject to a fee, refer to Examination Administrative & Other Fee Structure) is applicable to process their request. Candidates are reminded that they may not graduate whilst his/her appeal is pending.
